Primary School

The Primary curriculum followed by TLC is based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales which is split into 2 key stages, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Key stage one - Primary years 1 and 2

Curriculum overview

Key Stage 1 is Primary Year 1 and 2, children aged 5-7.

The curriculum states which subjects should be taught and the knowledge, skills and understanding the child should achieve in each subject.

At TLC we teach all National Curriculum subjects: English (Literacy), Mathematics (Numeracy), Science, Design and Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education (PE), Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Basic skills

There is a strong emphasis on basic skills in Year 1 and Year 2.

We want all children to be secure in the key skills expected by the end of Year 2 so as to ensure a smooth transition into Key Stage 2 (ie Primary Year Groups 3 to 6). We focus on developing reading, writing and numeracy skills.

A creative curriculum

We like to teach creatively and inspire the children to engage with the world around them.  Each term therefore we teach some subjects under a thematic topic.  Year 1 topics currently include, A Carnival of Animals and Weather Experts.  Year 2 topics include Oceans and Seas, The Great Fire of London and Famous for more than Five Minutes.

Most of all we remember at TLC that the children in our school are still young. They are eager to learn but also want to have fun. We have designed the curriculum so that teachers have fun teaching and children have fun learning, creating a  happy atmosphere throughout the school.

Arabic and Islamic studies

Arabic is taught as per the Ministry of Education guidelines for Muslim children.

Key stage two - Primary years 3 to 6

Curriculum overview

Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum for England and Wales covers Years 3 to 6,  children aged 7-11.

As with Key Stage 1, the curriculum states which subjects should be taught and the knowledge, skills and understanding the child should achieve in each subject.

At TLC we teach all National Curriculum subjects: English (Literacy), Mathematics (Numeracy), Science, Design and Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education (PE), Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

At Key Stage 2 it is suggested that children start to learn a foreign language.  Thus, French is introduced at Primary 3 level.

Arabic and Islamic studies

Arabic is taught as per the Ministry of Education guidelines for Muslim children.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE)

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) is an important and thought provoking subject. It is essential in enhancing personal development and well-being as well as establishing a safe learning environment for all children.  PSHEE is taught through our daily assemblies and during some topic sessions.

English and Mathematics

In Key Stage 2 the emphasis is on developing basic English and Mathematics skills learnt in Key Stage 1. Each day your child will practise his/her reading and writing skills in the Literacy hour and throughout the day in other subjects.

Mathematics is taught for an hour every day, focusing on key skills such as learning times tables and mental addition.

A creative curriculum

We continue with our creative curriculum from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2. In Years 3 to 6, we cover topics such as Rainforests, Egyptians and Greeks.

The children engage enthusiastically with the topics at home as well as at school. Several projects are set for topic work so children can research and work at home. They then enjoy bringing in their completed work to share with their class.

We want all children at TLC to love learning and engage with the curriculum.  We endeavour to make lessons enjoyable for all and have high expectations of what the children can achieve.
